Geography, as in British dictionary is defined as the study of the earth and its atmosphere, and of human activity as it affects and is affected by these. It includes; spatial, ecological, and regional complex approaches, geography become a holistic and dynamic science. Nowadays, environmental problem such as natural disaster has become the main issue that around the world should be recognized.
Natural disasters mostly cannot be avoided, but Geography has the answer to reduce the risks. Recently, most people really concern about the climate change. One of the causes of climate change is global warming, that usually called as greenhouse effects. The glass in greenhouse keeps the heat from the sun to make the greenhouse always warm. On the other hand, greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide do the same. Usually the heat from the sun warmth the earth, and then goes back up into space. Now, the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is so immense that they prevent the sun’s heat. It causes the earth’s temperature to rise and rise again. Since the earth is getting warmer, some parts of the world may experience very long periods of dry weather called droughts, which have bad effect on corps. Also, the warm weather causes the ice at the north and south poles to melt, which then causes floods in other parts of the world. People will lose their jobs, houses, and even some species of animal and plant will disappear. The earth will no longer be the most comfortable place to live as it used to be.
Having a safe life and be able to deal with disasters, many people are interested in geography. There must be a group discussion, organization, or an event for student and people who are concerned about geographical issues. That is the reason why IMAHAGI (Indonesia Geography Student Association) initiates Geographical International Symposium (GIS). The main purpose is to give solution and real action for those environmental problems.
Geography International Symposium is the first symposium that IMAHAGI designs. BEM KM (Student Association) of the Faculty of Geography, Universitas Gadjah Mada has the privilege hosting this activity.
This event is divided into three sessions. They are academic session, socio-cultural session, and regional meeting. The academic session consists of symposium, scholarship exhibition, oral presentation, youth conference, and university tour. The social and cultural session consists of cultural visit to some cultural sites in Yogyakarta and there will be a cultural night. Regional Meeting is a meeting that will discuss an agreement forming AGSA (ASEAN – Geography Student Association), activity, and our movement in the coming year
Every year, in each session there will be speakers and participants from some countries in the world discussing geographical issue. “Climate Change for Sustainability†is the theme of GIS 2012.
• Open student’s mind, so they can concern more about the issues especially which related to the theme of the Symposium, both in terms of scientific and academic experience of professionalism
