The impending review of the Data Protection Directive may incorporate a general requirement for data breach notification for all businesses.

This requirement, should it become compulsory, would affect every business, big or small and involve various costs, for example the costs of publicising the breach.

DataGuidance are holding a half-day briefing to ensure you are prepared.

At present, under the e-Privacy Directive, only telecoms service providers have a requirement to notify both the regulator & affected customers of data losses. Germany and Austria, however, have local laws which require notification.

The UK ICO has stated that they are pushing for breach notification to be a general requirement for all businesses
In the EU, Commissioner Viviane Reding has said she is pushing for breach notification for the financial services
In the US, there is a patchwork of state laws on breach notification. Will there be a federal law to pre-empt all state laws?

Don't miss this essential event for expert advice on setting up a data security policy and a breach notification policy.
