Marilyn Barrington Hearing is providing this Deaf/Hard of Hearing Conference at the Delta Winnipeg Hotel in Winnipeg, Manitoba on March 2, 2012 form 9am to 4pm. "Building Capacity: Effective Instruction for the Student with Hearing Loss: Mid-year Check-up" is offered to professional and support staff who may have new students with hearing loss on their caseloads, or staff who still have questions about student programming and progress. The "Feature Topic" is "Developing Literacy Through Spoken Language Competence". Key factors for developing spoken language competence will be demonstrated and highlighted. Optimally functioning hearing equipment is necessary to student success, and tips will be provided on how to be certain that hearing technology is working. Proven teaching strategies and materials will be shared. Understanding the specific challenges of Math language, the meaning of instructional vocabulary, and test questions will be discussed. Lastly, self-advocacy and how it relates to the feeling of belonging in the school setting will be explained.
Building capacity requires teamwork, and therefore, the target audience includes classroom teachers, resource teachers, itinerant teachers, educational assistants, SLPs,school administrators and other staff who work on the support team.
