Due to the initial success of the Federal Data Center Consolidation efforts, newly
appointed Federal CIO Steven VanRoekel has “moved the goalposts”, increasing
the scope of the consolidation efforts. By being ahead of schedule the original
baseline of 2000 centers closed by 2015 has been expanded to 3133, increasing
the estimated savings to more than $5 billion over the long term.
The ultimate goal of the consolidation efforts is energy savings. Data Centers
consume a growing portion of the Nations energy/electricity supply due to the
growing demands for the services they provide. The next few years will
showcase a focused energy in reducing the overall data center footprint.
