The BUC First International Conference: Negotiating Identity in language and Literature
19-20 September, 2012
Call for papers
Organizer: Al Buraimi University College, The Sultanate of Oman
Identity simply means who we are and how others perceive us. It is a language and culture rooted process that includes our understanding of our position and place in the world and others’ thoughts about who we are as well as who they are. Identity is not static. It is a changing concept which is always in a continuous process of negotiation, whether for cultures, nations, or individuals. Language and literature are made to be stages for such a negotiation, definition, and redefinition of one’s identity. This negotiation tries to answer questions like: what is identity? What is the impact of the world being a small village on one’s identity? Is identity socially constructed or willingly selected? This kind of negotiation and definition of “who is who”, especially in the new globalized world, gave rise to our conference. It is going to be devoted to the negotiation of identity in the broadest contexts possible related to language and literature. Thus, we cordially invite both young and senior scholars, from various international academic institutions, to present papers representing various research fields related to the conference topic: history, philosophy, popular culture, education, language studies, literary studies, theatre studies, translation studies, film studies, gender studies, etc.
