As at March 2012, 242 firm commercial LTE network deployments are either in deployment, commercially launched or are planned in 81 countries. Another 59 operators in 14 additional countries are engaged in LTE technology trials, tests and studies. 57 LTE operators have launched commercial services, 40% higher than a year ago. Commercial LTE services are now available in 32 countries.
By the end of 2012, it is expected there will be about 128 LTE commercial network launches. Circumventing spectrum allocation hurdles, deploying LTE in re-farmed spectrum, particularly 1800 MHz, is increasingly attractive for operators. In addition, there is the growing international acceptance of LTE TDD mode, five LTE TDD networks are commercially launched this year; numerous deployments and trials are underway or planned in other markets across the world including China, India, Australia, Malaysia, the Middle East, Russia, Africa, South America and many Asian markets.
In Taiwan, the government has approved plans to commence the 4G auction process in 2013, with 4G licenses to be issued by June 2014. The auction will be for spectrum in either the 700-MHz or 2.6-GHz bands, coupled with spectrum in the 900-MHz and 1,800-MHz band re-farmed from 2G operations.
