Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) Design and Testing (3 PDHs)
|Event Date/Time: Jul 18, 2012||End Date/Time: Jul 18, 2012|
Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) is the main civil engineering material in paving construction. More than 90% of roads and highways in North America are paved with HMA; therefore, many civil engineers work in the design, production, and construction of HMA. A successful design and testing of HMA need significant knowledge, experience, and engineering judgements.
During the last decade, several developments in the asphalt mix industry have happened. The most important developments in the design and testing of HMA include a new grading system for asphalt cement (Performance Grade- PG) as well a new mix design method (Superpave). Although many agencies use these new methods, other agencies use the traditional design and testing methods or a combination of new and old systems.
The main objective of this webinar is to provide participants with a fundamental understanding of the traditional and new HMA design and testing.
This webinar is intended for all engineers and technologists who work in the design, production, and quality control/assurance of HMA. It is an excellent opportunity for those wishing to develop their knowledge on the latest technology in the area of HMA.

Instructor: Hamid R. Soleymani, PhD, PEng
Hamid R. Soleymani has a BSc and MSc in Civil Engineering and Transportation Engineering from Iran University of Science and Technology. He obtained his PhD from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada. After graduation, he worked as a postdoctoral research associate at the North Central Superpave Center at Purdue University (USA) for three years.
Hamid Joined the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta in 2000 and taught civil engineering materials, transportation, and pavement management systems at the graduate and undergraduate level.
He worked with EBA Consultant Engineering as a senior pavements and materials engineer from 2006 to 2010. During this time, he completed many pavement preservation and materials projects as well as research studies for Alberta Transportation and other highway agencies. Dr. Soleymani rejoined the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering as the Director of Transportation Research Centre in 2010.
Dr. Soleymani has more than 13 years of academic and industrial experience and is a registered engineer in Alberta. He has published more than 30 papers in technical journals and conferences. His expertise and research interest areas are: asphalt and Portland cement concrete, Superpave mix design, pavements design, maintenance, and rehabilitation, materials characterization and modeling, pavement performance evaluation, mechanistic pavement design, and pavement management systems.
