The open workshop will address in particular research on a new economic relational/circularized urban base, starting from port cities, where the potential of creativity seems to be greater for integrating economic growth, ecological preservation and social opportunities in a win-win-win strategy. In particular, the goals of the workshop would be:
1. to seek for a balanced development of – and cooperation between – the various stakeholders’ interests regarding port areas/cities;
2. to identify principles, approaches and tools that would reconcile the different objectives and initiatives of a multiplicity of distinct stakeholders;
3. to map out learning modes based on good practices or experiences in various parts of the world; identify the necessary conditions for the design of the creative sector and sustainable developments in port areas/cities; seek for appropriate indicators and research tools for mapping out the performance of new port area/cities development initiatives; identify innovative tools able to implement UNESCO HUL proposal, balancing competition and social sustainability; identify method to assess the value of intangible capital; propose models of local development able to create new values starting from landscape/territory in a productive perspective; apply the HUL approach to city dynamic, as a catalyst for local development do compare new financial models for financing creative city actions; learn from best practices how to reduce poverty through circularization of economic processes and using culture and no-conventional forms of economic organization of value creation; verify the potential of civil economic sector to support a new integrated economic model of sustainable development.

Call for Papers: The Scientific Committee invites researchers and practitioners to submit abstracts of papers for presentation at the Open Workshop. Abstracts should only be submitted via email at The deadline for abstract submission is July, 24th 2012. Papers should discuss original, theoretical approaches and/or practical best/good practices with important lessons learned. The Notification of acceptance/rejection of the abstracts submitted will be published on this website ( by August, 12th, 2012. Each submitted abstract will be reviewed by members of the Scientific Committee, which will decide on the acceptance for presentation in Open Workshop session. The Scientific Committee will select papers to be published in a journal or book.
