tructural Health Monitoring is an emerging field in which
nonintrusive damage detection devices are integrated into a
structure at any stage (construction, in-service, testing,
before and after rehabilitation, etc) to monitor the entire
structure or individual members. This technology is one in
which the system reports on the condition of a structure by
making engineering-based judgments with minimum human
intervention, providing early warning of critical conditions.
These systems can provide real-time continuous sensing,
advanced remote sensing, and self-diagnostic and decisionmaking
functions. The applicability, capability and viability of
these technologies for effective short- and long-term
monitoring of new and existing structures can extend the
useful life of structure by allowing deterioration or damage
to be identified earlier, before and after major
rehabilitation. The workshop on Structural health
monitoring and rehabilitation is being organized by the Civil
Engineering Department, Birla Institute of Technology and
Science, Pilani (Rajasthan) during September 19-20th, 2012.
• To keep the researchers and the practicing engineers
working in the broad field of structural engineering
abreast of the latest trends and developments in these
fields with the aim of updating their analytical and
practical skills to ensure structural safety; extend the
lifetime of a deficient structure; improve knowledge and
understanding of a structure and optimize operations
and maintenance costs.
• To provide an exposure to young scientists in particular
and researchers in general.
• To form a panel of experts to examine and evaluate the
necessary changes required in the course curriculum for
the civil Engineering.
• To disseminate the knowledge and research findings of
the projects undergoing at BITS Pilani through young
researchers and discuss the importance of recently
sanctioned UK-India Research Initiatives (UKIERI)
standard collaborative research awards and its research
The course has been planned to provide the necessary
background and exposure on Structural Health Monitoring
and Rehabilitation through lectures and demonstrations. The
topics to be covered are:
• FRP reinforced and pre-stressed concrete structure:
Analysis and design
• Evaluation of existing structures
• Rehabilitation and retrofitting of deficient structures
• Structural health monitoring
• Durability based design of RC Beams/Girders
• Earthquake resistant design of structures
• Seismic retrofit of foundation and rehabilitation
• Rehabilitation of damaged foundations subjected to
dynamic loads
• Non-destructive evaluation of concrete pavement
• Repair and rehabilitation of concrete pavements
• Disaster mitigation technique
Application for participation in the workshop may be sent in
the attached proforma along with the registration fee to
Prof. Shamsher Bahadur Singh so as to reach him before 15th
July, 2012. The fee should be remitted by a crossed demand
draft in favour of “BITS Pilani” payable at payable at State
Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur, Pilani. Intimation of acceptance
of registration for the course will be communicated to the
participants by 1st August, 2012. Rs. 3000/- per participant
and limited seats are available for students for whom; the fee
is Rs. 2000/-. Travel, boarding and lodging expenses of the
participants will have to be borne by the participants or their
sponsoring organizations. However, limited accommodation
in the V-FAST Hostel at BITS Pilani is available on sharing
basis. Therefore, participants, who wish to avail this facility,
are advised to write to Prof. Shamsher Bahadur Singh well in
advance, and in any case, not later than 1st August, 2012.
