About the Seminar- Urbanisation is a continuously growing phenomenon in most of the world and particularly in developing countries with intensified pace post globalization. The process of becoming urban from primary based rural economy and lifestyle uses significant amounts of resources. The need for better urban amenities and infrastructure has increased the pressure on the environment leading to ecological imbalance. Increasing urbanization, rapid growth in urban population, urban sprawl and increasing consumerism and changing way of life of millions has significant impact on natural environment. At present, many parts of the world including India are witnessing highly degraded environmental indices. Many metropolitan cities of China, India, Brazil, South-east Asia, and even some cities in the developed world like Los Angeles and Rome have got high levels of pollution and unhealthy environmental conditions. Many research works by scholars support the view that urbanisation has had an impact on natural environment at the regional, national and even global levels. Growing air pollution, water pollution, deforestation, and land degradation are the challenges in the face of rapid economic and urban growth in India.
In the coming years the process of urbanization is likely to grow at faster rates especially in developing countries like- India, Brazil, South Africa, Egypt etc. The environmental cost of urbanisation needs in-depth analysis. Academicians and research scholars cannot remain isolated from this growing concern before our society. The proposed theme “Urbanisation and Changing State of Environment” of the seminar will provide an opportunity to raise the issues, concerns, and probable solution for moving ahead.
