About CARE: Headquartered in Atlanta, GA, CARE was founded in 1945 to provide relief to the survivors of World War II. Today CARE is one of the world's largest international humanitarian organizations with a presence in over 84 countries.
CARE's mission is to serve individuals and families in the poorest communities in the world with a focus on empowering girls and women because we believe they hold the key to creating lasting change in their communities. We seek a world of hope, tolerance and social justice, where poverty has been overcome and people live in dignity and security. Immediately following the earthquake that devastated Haiti in January 2010, CARE focused on meeting basic humanitarian needs. During the initial months we served more than 290,000 people with crucial assistance including tarps, tents, shelter kits, mattresses, blankets, kitchen sets, hygiene kits, safe delivery kits, newborn kits and food.
From the earliest days, CARE developed a strategy for reconstruction and sustainable development. Today, our earthquake response programming has shifted to a longer-term focus, including: Encouraging families still living in tent camps to return to their original neighborhoods by improving living conditions in areas of return. Providing economic development opportunities and increased food security for families eager to improve their livelihoods through cash-for-work programs, establishment of kitchen gardens and creation of village savings and loan associations to generate cash savings which allow families to launch micro-enterprises and gain access to markets. Improving educational opportunity and psychosocial services for children.
