Mortgage lending is a growth industry in Europe and the volume of mortgage loans outstanding has more than doubled in nominal terms since 1990. At the end of 1999, it exceeded 3.4 trillion EUR.

Europe’s mortgage industry is at a critical point: the introduction of the Euro will increase competition and price transparency, depository will institutions find it increasingly difficult to attract deposits, the Commission’s internal market programme will push further liberalisation of national mortgage markets and banks face pressures for higher return on equity.

In this changing environment, mortgage lenders are currently exploring new strategies, new distribution channels and technologies to increase the competitive position.

Will Europe’s mortgage market develop into a US style market?

Europe’s approach to regulations – both at national and at European level – holds the answer to this question.

With this in mind, Access Conferences have produced this timely conference in association with the European Mortgage Federation, which builds on the success of our previous mortgage market conferences that took place in London and Barcelona.

Will increased consumer protection gradually harmonise Europe’s diverse mortgage products? Will the new capital adequacy rules will allow lenders to improve the management of their risks and increase securitisation. The conference will address these new regulations and explore how they will shape the industry’s future.

The event has been designed to provide delegates with case studies examining mortgage strategies in individual countries, as well as exploring technological advances and the effect these will have in the industry today and in the future.
